Artist Statement
On moving to Finland in 2010 I started to paint again after many years away from it, following a different career path, and exhibited for the first time again in 2015. However having developed an artist perspective at a young age, in many ways I never really left it.
Since school days I’ve taken watercolours out to describe the landscapes around me. Inspiration continues to be found for me beyond the walls of my studio, in the Finnish nature. The extreme and ever changing Finnish seasons, from the dark cold snowy winters, to the hot white-nights of midsummer, endlessly transform the forested landscapes I am repeatedly drawn back to.
Painting landscapes for me is not a substitute for nature, but in this increasingly busy urbanized modern life, is a way of reawakening a forgotten need to connect with it. And through being and painting in nature, the creative imagination develops quiet and lasting understandings of the significance of this connectedness.
Personal, poetic, profound, scientific and political: the contemporary natural world is all of these, if only the door to the outside is opened from within. My goal is to create a painted space where the viewer can pause and quieten their mind, allowing such connections to occur.
